Berber stripe rugs are the older sibling of the better-known Beni Ourain. Where the Beni Ourain works on diamond and lattice geometry, the Berber stripe relies on horizontal banding alone, with each band a different texture, scale, or weave structure. The form belonged to the rural weavers of the Atlas mountains who used available wool, occasional silk, and whatever colour their household indigo and madder pots produced that season. The discipline of the design is in the proportions of the bands, not in the colour or pattern of any single one.
Two weavers shared the loom for around four months on this 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) piece. The rug is knotted in silk on a cotton foundation, which is a deliberate departure from the village wool original; the silk takes the dye to a clearer ivory and gives the surface the soft luster the wool form cannot match. The pile is short, around six millimetres, finer than the wool counterpart but with greater colour clarity. The banding is hand-laid row by row from the cartoon.
The composition
An ivory field crossed by narrow stripes in muted multi tones, indigo greys, soft madder, walnut brown, and warm bone. The bands are widely spaced; the negative ivory ground occupies most of the rug, with the stripe rhythm playing across it like score marks on a sheet of paper. The silk reflects light unevenly, so the ivory shifts cool and warm depending on viewing angle. The colour reads contemporary while the structure is unchanged from the village originals.
What you are buying
Vintage Berber stripe pieces of this scale rarely appear in silk, and where they do, antique dealers in Marrakech and Paris price them between 4,000 and 8,000 euros. Contemporary silk Berber rugs at Western retail run 3,500 USD plus. The rug here is at the source production cost. The silk pile gains rather than loses surface character with age, and the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits at the foot of a king bed, anchors a small living area with a two-seat sofa and pair of chairs, or grounds a reading nook with a daybed and side table. The ivory ground and quiet multi banding pair with bleached oak, brass detailing, plaster walls, and travertine. Silk holds best out of direct sun; an east-facing or filtered light room is the natural home for the piece.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end to end every four months; silk shows wear faster than wool and benefits from a more frequent rotation. Vacuum on suction only with no beater bar. Blot any spill immediately with a dry cotton cloth. Silk should be hand washed by a specialist conservator every four to six years; never machine wash and never steam.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Customer Reviews
Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
