Hand tufting sits between the drafting table and the loom. The drawing goes onto a cotton canvas, the wool is fed through with a hand-held gun, and a finisher sculpts the surface with shears at the end. The technique is what made room-scale modern rug design economically possible, and it is the route by which most living designers get their work onto a floor.
Built in India across around five weeks. Two tufters fed polypropylene through the canvas with the gun, the back was bonded with latex and finished with a cotton scrim, and the surface was sculpted with long shears in a final pass. The relief is what stops the pattern from dissolving into noise at viewing distance, and it is the difference between a tufted rug that reads as a designed object and one that reads as a printed surface.
The composition
Neutral dominates the composition. The pattern is carved into the pile rather than printed on it, which is why the contrast deepens with use rather than fading. The wool is yarn-dyed before the gun is loaded, locking the colour into the staple, and the finishing shears were used to lift the figured area above the ground field.
The piece in a room
5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) is the working scale for a primary bedroom or a medium living area. The neutral ground reads against warm white, putty, or a softer plaster tone, and the geometry holds at viewing distance from a sofa or dining chair. Pairs with walnut, oak, linen upholstery, leather. Direct sunlight on the rug deepens the colour relationships; the piece is built to be lived on, not protected.
Care
Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot, do not rub, when something spills. Light shedding for the first month is normal and does not affect the pile density. A professional dry clean every three years restores the colour and lifts compaction in heavy-traffic spots.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?
Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
