The Persian medallion is one of the oldest organising devices in the floor-covering tradition. A single nucleus, a quiet field, a contained border. Everything in the rug answers to the centre. The piece was washed after cutting from the loom and finished by hand-shearing to even the pile and bring the drawing forward at the right relief.

The composition

Yellow carries the field with a depth that only comes from wool taken through multiple dye baths. The pattern resolves at the scale of a room, not at the scale of a sample. The colour shifts by a perceptible degree from one end of the rug to the other, the signature of plant-based dyeing rather than a fault in the work.
