The patchwork overdyed tradition has run through Indian and west Asian weaving for generations, carried from one workshop to the next as a way of organising the field rather than as a fixed pattern. The drawing in front of you takes that lineage and lets a contemporary natural palette do the talking. The result is a rug that quotes the old vocabulary in a voice that belongs to a present-day room.

What separates a good knotted rug from a serviceable one is patience at every step before the loom. The wool is sorted by staple length. The dye is matured for days. The cartoon is drawn full-scale. The loom is dressed by hand. By the time the first knot is tied, the piece already has more hours behind it than most factory-made rugs accumulate from start to finish.

The piece was knotted in India by a single weaver on a vertical loom over 2 to 3 months. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in small lots before it reached the loom, then tied row by row against a cotton warp and weft. The piece was washed after cutting from the loom and finished by hand-shearing to even the pile and bring the drawing forward at the right relief.

The composition

The dominant note is natural. The drawing carries through the field in soft modulations of tone rather than in hard outlines, which is how a hand-knotted wool rug reads at room scale. Vegetable dye gives each square inch a slight irregularity, the abrash that flat industrial colour cannot reproduce. Over the next ten years the saturation will lighten in the high-traffic zones and deepen in the protected ones, and the rug will settle into its room.

What you are buying

This is a hand-knotted wool rug at a working price for the format. Comparable construction through retail channels carries a meaningful premium. The rug is an entry into the medium rather than an investment piece, but the construction is genuine and the wool will age the way wool ages.

The piece in a room

4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) sits comfortably as a bedside runner, an entry mat, or a defined corner inside a larger room. The natural palette reads against both warm wood floors and cool stone, and the small format lets the drawing carry without needing to anchor a furniture group. The piece works particularly well in a position where it is seen from above on approach, an entry hall or a landing, where the figure resolves at standing height.

Conservation

Rotate end-for-end every six months so traffic and light age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, work from the outside of the spill toward the centre, never rub. A trained wool conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the rug runs sixty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.

Have a question about this rug?
