Vintage overdyed weaving treats the rug as a palimpsest. The original drawing remains visible underneath the new colour, the way an old fresco shows through a painted wall. The result is a piece that reads as both old and contemporary at once, with the saturation of a contemporary colour-field painting and the figurative depth of a traditional rug.

The technique requires a wool that takes the second dye unevenly, holding more pigment in the cut ends and less in the depths of the pile. Hand-spun yarn behaves this way naturally. Mill-spun yarn does not. The variation in the surface is what gives the rug its painterly quality.

The piece was knotted in India by a single weaver on a vertical loom over 2 to 3 months. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in small lots before it reached the loom, then tied row by row against a cotton warp and weft. The piece was washed after cutting from the loom and finished by hand-shearing to even the pile and bring the drawing forward at the right relief.

The composition

The dominant note is grey. The drawing carries through the field in soft modulations of tone rather than in hard outlines, which is how a hand-knotted wool rug reads at room scale. Vegetable dye gives each square inch a slight irregularity, the abrash that flat industrial colour cannot reproduce. Over the next ten years the saturation will lighten in the high-traffic zones and deepen in the protected ones, and the rug will settle into its room.

What you are buying

This is a hand-knotted wool rug at a working price for the format. Comparable construction through retail channels carries a meaningful premium. The rug is an entry into the medium rather than an investment piece, but the construction is genuine and the wool will age the way wool ages.

The piece in a room

4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) sits comfortably as a bedside runner, an entry mat, or a defined corner inside a larger room. The grey palette reads against both warm wood floors and cool stone, and the small format lets the drawing carry without needing to anchor a furniture group. The piece works particularly well in a position where it is seen from above on approach, an entry hall or a landing, where the figure resolves at standing height.

Conservation

Conservation is straightforward. Suction-only vacuuming once a week. A rotation each season. Cold-water blotting for accidents. Avoid placing the rug under furniture that rocks or that has felt-covered glides on a wet day. A conservator's wash every six or seven years restores the colour depth that interior light slowly washes out.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Free standard delivery across mainland UK is 3–5 working days. Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland and remote postcodes typically take 5–7 working days. We’ll email a tracking link as soon as your order is dispatched.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each rug is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for £25 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp or email us with the SKU and your delivery postcode to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you may return your order within 14 days of delivery for a full refund, in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email support@rugsville.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp with your order number and we’ll arrange a return collection. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted rugs typically take 8–14 weeks depending on size and complexity (production plus shipping to the UK). Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Do you ship to Europe / outside the UK?

Our online checkout currently ships to mainland UK only. For orders to the EU, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland please email support@rugsville.co.uk with the SKU and full address — we’ll quote courier and any duties before processing.
