The motif vocabulary of this collection comes out of contemporary Indian design studios working with mid-century European geometry as their reference set. The lines are graphic, the colour blocks are clean, the construction is engineered to keep production time inside two months without compromising on the wool weight or the pile density. A drawing takes weeks before it ever reaches the loom.

Two tufters and a finisher worked the rug over 6 weeks in India. The wool was gun-tufted into a stretched cotton primary backing, then sealed at the reverse with natural latex and bonded to a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand with long blades to bring the black field to a uniform plane, and a final pass with shears carved the motif a few millimetres clear of the ground so the pattern reads in relief at room scale.

The composition

Colour does the work. The wool was over-dyed in two baths to reach the depth shown, which is why the black reads with a subtle internal variation rather than as a flat block. The pattern was drawn for room scale, which means the geometry holds at six paces and only resolves into its detail when you stand on the rug.

The piece in a room

Bedroom or sitting room scale. The black field pairs with oak floors and warm walls, with brass and matte black hardware both. Black grounds are demanding; pair with high-contrast walls and minimal pattern in the upholstery. Underfoot it has the warmth and density of a deeper-pile rug; visually it has the geometry of a contemporary studio piece.

Care

Weekly suction vacuuming. Spills lift with cotton and cool water if attended to within the first hour. Expect mild shedding for the first month of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile. A professional rug cleaning every three years keeps the black register at its full saturation and refreshes the pile lay. Avoid soaking the rug; the latex backing prefers surface cleaning to deep wet work.
